In a full substantive edit, I provide extensive written notes, with a chapter-by-chapter breakdown, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and offering alternative approaches and strategies. If the manuscript is a work of fiction, for example, I would pay attention to plot and character development, and the effectiveness of dialogue. With a work of non-fiction, I would address the manuscript’s overall structure and flow, and the clarity of its thesis. For all manuscripts, I would examine the consistency of tone and pace, and whether your authentic voice is clearly expressed.
Substantive Editing
In an editorial review, I provide an overall evaluation of the manuscript, examining the same issues as in a substantive edit, but in less detail, without a chapter-by-chapter breakdown. This is ideal for manuscripts at an earlier stage of development, or when an author is unsure of the next step.
Editorial Review
Copyediting involves working through a manuscript line-by-line to make each sentence as clear, concise and effective as possible. This includes correcting grammar, spelling, punctuation and factual errors. It will also address consistency and flow, and remove unnecessary repetition.
Copyediting
Proofreading is the final stage of review before a manuscript is published or shared, in which I correct errors that remain or creep in after a manuscript has been edited.
Proofreading
Co-writing involves taking your ideas, journal entries, notes (dictated or written), etc. and writing a polished manuscript on your behalf.
